Great News for Beach Protection

I was just reading around the internet and came across an article from last summer.  Some of you may have heard about it, but it is news to me.  On the website SeaSurfer.org, a post came up about how Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle has established two surf reserves on the island of Oahu.  Executive Order 10-07 was signed into effect on July 2, 2010 and established the Duke Kahanamoku Surfing Reserve, which protects breaks from the Ala Wai canal through the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium; and the North Shore Reserve, which protects the Ali'i Beach Park through Sunset Beach.

This is a huge breakthrough as states and advocates for beach protection all over the country and world are looking to protect their beaches.  Currently, movements to protect Trestles in California and a few beaches on the New Jersey Shore coast are looking for similar protection.  Groups such as Surfrider have started a movement called 'Save Trestles' to try and protect the iconic surf site from potential highway construction.

Protection of your beaches is a great cause to get involved in.  I am currently trying to save up a few bucks to become a member of Surfrider and possibly even get an internship with them (hopefully!).  We may be so naive to think that they will always be there, but each year, human activity is rapidly destroying the beaches that bring us so much enjoyment.  So get involved and spread the word to your friends, you don't have to join these organizations but you can start by picking up trash that you see and not contributing to the harm of beaches anymore.
