I love Costa Rica, the vibes of Pura Vida are rich in the atmosphere of the land and people. It has one of the richest surf cultures in the world in an area where poverty is large. But for the country of Costa Rica, they are doing everything they can to preserve their environment. After doing some research on a few websites including Surfline, news has come about that the Costa Rican Government has officially shot down the proposal to create a tuna farm at the mouth of the Golfo Dulce. The project, called Granjas Atuneras', planned for 80 farms 1 kilometer off of the coast (in waters important to wildlife and sea turtle migration) to raise yellow-fin tuna for commercial purposes.
With the help of attorneys, surfers, locals and international organizations such as Save the Waves, Costa Rica's Environmental Secretariat ordered document 2723-2011 to be put into effect and ending all hopes of this project.
This is a huge win for the country of Costa Rica and its people. The areas of Pavones and Punta Banco were saves from environmental damages that were falsified by the advocates of the project. I am stoked to have come across this news; even thought its big, there are still plenty of other environmental issues that Costa Rica, as well as the world, face and need to be solved. Go to your nearest Surfrider chapter or environmental protection group to take part in this movement.
